Another month passes, and with it comes another installment of Grand Scheme’s Time of the Month mix series. I was already quite impressed with the releases that came out last April, but HOT DAMN May was equally impressive! The first six months of 2013 is already shaping up to be far better than the first six months of 2012 in the world of electronic music.

This May saw the release of what is now my third favorite electronic LP release of 2013. Along with The Asphodells Ruled By Passion, Destroyed By Lust [Rotters Golf Club] and King‘s Koncepts [Seclusiasis], Houndstooth Records released the latest incarnation of Berlin-based badman, Dylan Richards – House of Black LanternsKill The Lights. Richards’ previous incarnations as Zilla [Warp Records] and King Cannibal [Ninja Tune] were impressive in their own right, but his House of Black Lanterns project may be his best to date. Kill The Lights is nothing less than a masterpiece. As Richards admits himself, the record is “more restrained than anything I have worked on before”, with “the threat of violence…buried deep in texture rather than worn outwardly on my sleeve.” And, much like Daft Punk did with Giorgio Moroder on their painfully disappointing Random Access Memories, Richards channels the spirit of other 1970s electronic icon, Wendy Carlos, throughout Kill the Lights’ sonic dystopia. This record is a triumph and one of the few perfect records released thus far in 2013. I included House of Black Lanterns’ “Beg” in this month’s mix.

I also received this May the AMAZING [and free] compilation coming from Seclusiasis on June 7th – Dev79 presents Street Bass Bootlegs 3. I am honored that my Kw Griff remix was selected to be included in this compilation among such talents as Starkey, King, Distal, MANIKAN, and Aquadrop. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to hear what Starkey does with Danny Brown’s “Grown Up” and Ciara’s “Got Me Good”, but until then, you can get a taste of the thunder coming from this compilation with King’s brilliant originals from King, MANIKAN, and Tastetester. Dev79 presents Street Bass Bootlegs 3 will be a free download on ClubTapes via this link.

Other highlights this month was the long overdue Kill Frenzy Make That Booty Clap remix EP off of Dirtybird (the Martin Brothers remix is featured on this month’s mix); MyrryrsSouthside Horror from Body High;Cardopusher‘s acid-laced Faults from Boys Noize Records, and; Maelstrom‘s return to Gesaffelstein & The Hacker‘s Zone with his Resistance.

Oh & go cop Grand Scheme’s amazing Doughboy T-shirt that you see me wearing in this month’s cover art. One of the cooler T-shirts I’ve seen in a while.
